General Advice

Here are a few general principles for new members to appreciate when practicing aikido.

- Be on time for classes. Please arrive10-15 minutes early to help put out the mats as a courtesy to other members of the club.

- Try to observe the correct dojo etiquette (see the section on etiquette for more details). Aikido teaches self-discipline and part of this is the etiquette of practice.

- Wear loose fitting clothing for your first practice, and do not wear jewellery on the mat. If you intend to practise regularly, you will need to purchase a gi (white training uniform). The club can advise you on where to obtain a suitable one and provide them at a discounted price.

- Work within your own limits when training. Remember to enjoy your practice and not to worry if things seem difficult at first.

- Don’t try to compete with others – remember that aikido is not a sporting contest.

- Don’t be afraid to ask questions whenever you need to.

- Don’t give up too easily. Aikido is one of the more difficult martial arts to master and at first it may seem too much to take in. Everyone feels like that at first; only through regular practice will things become clear!
