Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art. Drawing influence from the days of feudal Japan and the samurai, it includes a full range of strikes, throws and pins against an armed (stick, sword and knife) or unarmed attacker. Aikido is so effective that it's used to train the Tokyo Riot Police.
You don't need to be strong and powerful to train effectively. Aikido exploits the weaknesses in your opponent's attacks and we will focus on developing your timing, balance and speed. Learning Aikido will enable you to unlock the secrets of self-defence, help keep you fit and promote a more confident, relaxed and calmer you.

O'Sensei: Aikido's Founder
Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) was a highly skilled martial artist. Studying under a number of different schools throughout his life, Ueshiba mastered a number of martial arts including Daito-Ryu Aikijutsu, Yagyu Shingan Ryu taijutsu, Kashima Shinto Ryu kenjutsu and Judo.
Ueshiba took influences from each of these arts and distilled their essence into the efficient fighting system we now call Aikido.

Aikido is a subtle art and it takes time to learn but if you stick at it, you'll pick up the basics in pretty quickly.
Essentially, Aikido is a grappling art that contains a range of locks, pins and throws that are effective against an armed or unarmed attacker. Aikido will help you develop your focus, your awareness, your timing and speed to take advantage of a situation and resolve conflict in a safe and effective way.
